NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC HANDS ON EXPLORER
Cady V, Glenmore Hunt, was one of 15 finalists chosen to be a member of the 2009 National Geographic Hands on Explorer Trip to Peru.  Cady won this contest after submitting an essay on how she actively explored her world and the interesting things that she found and learned.  Here is an excerpt taken from her winning essay.  I think they may have had to submit photos along with their essay.  As a result of her winning essay she got to go on an all expense paid for trip, received a digital SLR camera from Nikon and had an incredible experience.
“A burst of crimson shoots into the sky as a cardinal bursts into flight. Not long afterwards, a trio of chickadees explodes into chirps of joy and happiness. The soft hum of a downy woodpecker hammering an oak tree can be heard. I have discovered all these sights and sounds in the exploration of my own backyard. I have identified twenty-three birds in our yard, including mourning doves, hummingbirds, and woodpeckers. … I share my love of birds through art and photography. Last year, I illustrated a field guide with all of the birds I had seen in my yard and shared it with my class.”
I want to read the rest of her essay, see some of her photos and hear about her trip.  I am sure that she had an unforgettable experience.  We are very proud of you Cady and so happy that you had this experience.

RADIO COMMENTATOR DEBUT
Katherine A and Whitney A, Sinking Creek, were two of 5 pony club members chosen to do live reports on Horse Radio during the Rolex International.  They had the luck of getting to report on the cross country phase of the competition, surely the most exciting.   Each region has the opportunity to get 2 tickets for the Rolex to be used by pony club members and since Sinking Creek had a number of kids going they got the tickets to use as they felt best.  Then we find out that the girls were selected to do the radio reporting for Horse Radio.  I listened to their report and they were quite good – very professional.  Perhaps they have found their calling!!!  WAY TO GO GIRLS!!
